Mastering Business Intelligence: The Art of Data Visualization

In business intelligence, one of the most common requests I hear is:

“Can you show everything in one view?”

Recently, a stakeholder approached me with a similar request: a single chart displaying 15 KPIs. Technically, it was possible. Practically, it was a recipe for visual overload.


Understanding the Challenge


When someone asks for a comprehensive view, it often stems from a desire for clarity. However, cramming too much information into one chart can lead to confusion. It’s like trying to read a book while someone’s shouting the plot from the next room. You might catch bits and pieces, but the overall story gets lost.


Why I Didn’t Say “No”


Flatly rejecting the request would have shut down collaboration. Instead, I wanted to guide them toward a solution that met their needs and followed best practices in data visualization.


I decided to create two prototypes:

  1. A focused chart showing only the top 5 most critical KPIs to drive decision-making.

  2. A drill-through page that contained the remaining 10 KPIs for those who required more detailed information.


The Power of Side-by-Side Comparison


When I presented both options, the difference was immediate. The clean, focused version told a clear story. The “everything” chart felt overwhelming and hard to interpret. Without me pushing an agenda, the stakeholder naturally chose the streamlined version.


The Importance of Clarity in Data


Data visualization isn’t just about making pretty charts. It’s about making information accessible and understandable. When we clutter a dashboard with too many metrics, we risk losing the essence of what we’re trying to convey.


The Lesson: Less Is Often More


This experience reinforced something I’ve learned over time: Good dashboard design is not about showing all the data. It’s about showing the right data in a way that empowers quick, confident decisions.


By respecting the stakeholder’s request while introducing best practices, we arrived at a solution that worked for both sides — and delivered more value in the process.

Understanding who will use the data is crucial. Tailor your visualizations to their needs and expertise. Are they data-savvy or do they need a simpler approach?
